International Rules of Volleyball

What shall I wear?

Non-marking sports shoes and suitable clothing attire for sports action. Some business teams wear uniforms but this is not compulsory.

What is the minimum number of players I can have?

Minimum number of players is 6 including 2 women on the court at all times.

Which part of the body can I use to hit the ball?

Any part of the body can contact the ball from waist up, for safety reasons kicking of the ball is not tolerated in the social Grade.

Do you supply the volleyballs for the games?

All the sports equipment is supplied.

How big is the court?

For social volleyball we have 3 games going on at once with one net the entire length of the civic center the court lines are fully marked and easy to see.

How does the scoring work?

The team that wins the rally scores a point irrespective of who served. In Greymouth each set is up to 25 points and must be won by 2 points, but sometimes having to win by 2 can mean a game will go as high as 30.

What is a foot fault?

The server may move freely within the service zone.  At the moment of the service hit the server must not touch the court or the court lines. Due to the court size in Greymouth the server serving on the Back wall side may have one foot only inside the court to serve the ball.

When is a net fault not a net fault?

The player may not touch any part of the net, but if the ball is driven into the net and causes it to touch an opponent no fault is committed.

How often do I do Referee?

As this is a social sport all teams must supply a Referee once every 2 weeks.

What happens if I have never refereed before?

Refereeing usually involves referring teams of the same grade, so all you need to know is the basic rules (which you will pick up playing). For new teams (only) a buddy referee can be supplied on request (please contact Ken Rikardson, the Draw official 1 week before hand) for the first 4 weeks until you have the hang of it.

What happens if the team cannot make a night to referee?

Unless prior arrangements are made with the Draw official (1 week before hand), your team will not play the next week. If we know we can arrange something, if no one turns up for your refereeing you will let down 2 other teams.

What happens if the team cannot make a night to play?

Please let us know one week in advance so we can try and reschedule, otherwise you will lose all competition points for that game and will miss out on that particular game.  Note – Rescheduling will be up to the Draw official’s discretion.
